NGCA-ATLroof.com Training Camp Report

With tremendous enthusiasm for the 2010 campaign, the NGCA-ATLroof.com raceteam (formerly Team Cycleworks p/b HDR) gathered on the plains just outside LaGrange, GA last weekend for a late winter training camp. With 7 State titles and 1 National title in the last two years, NGCA-ATLroof.com will again be fielding competitive squads in Men's Cat 4, Cat 3 and Master's divisions as well as Women's 1,2,3. The off-season has been a busy one. With the loss of previous title sponsor, HDR, the organization inked a multi-year deal with one of Atlanta's highest rated commercial and residential roofing companies- ATLroof.com. And, after a merger with Roswell Velo, there was a move to Roswell Bicycles as the shop sponsor. In addition to the upcoming racing season, the club is looking forward to making its' annual contribution to the Georgia racing calendar by hosting the Historic Roswell Criterium on Sunday 04/25 and the Cherokee County Road Race on Saturday 06/05.

With the break caught within the last kilometer Travis made a bold move and initiated a solo attack on the uphill approach to the line. The field could not answer and Travis took home the gold medal! On a weekend that started with the need for solid team cohesion, the Cat 4 squad delivered the goods. A win, is a win, is a win, right? Well, the Cat 4 team won the TTT by a one second margin, that's up two positions from an earlier season TTT. The squad, more specifically, Dan Klapheke, designated as their GC guy, was able to protect the omnium lead through the criterium and into the challenging road race. With only a 4 point omnium lead going into the road race, we marked our rival and he marked Dan. Going over the steep 2 mile climb the first time, Dan lost 2 omnium points to his rival sprinting for KOM points. Approaching the climb for the final time, the pace quite high, Dan saw his rival go out the back door. Dropped! Whew, right? Wrong! His rival, being somewhat larger than Dan, waited for a less steep portion of the climb to put in his final burst of energy. Caught off guard, Dan saw his rival place two positions ahead of him on the climb, making up those last two omnium points!! A tie, right? Wrong!! By virtue of the 1 second TTT victory on Saturday, Dan was declared the omnium champ!!!! Congratulations also goes to Michael Gordon who finished third for the weekend.
